National Endangered Species Day is celebrated every year on the third Friday of May. On this day thousands of people around the world learn about endangered. This year the day is dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and raising awareness of endangered species. National Endangered Species Day is a call to action – a day to learn about the amazing animals and plants that are in danger and discover ways in which we can all contribute to their survival. This year in 2025, National Endangered Species Day will be celebrated on 16 May.
The reason behind this is that in the year 1975, National Endangered Day was first celebrated on March 3, but in the year 2006, the United Nations decided to celebrate it on the third Friday of May instead of the date with the aim of spreading awareness about the environment in view of increasing global warming. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the vital importance of preserving biodiversity and promoting conservation efforts to ensure the survival of vulnerable species.
The Endangered Species Coalition considers its purpose to be preventing the extinction of the country’s at-risk species, protecting and restoring their ecosystems, and leading these fragile populations toward recovery. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the list of endangered species has more than doubled in the past two decades. The day inspires individuals to take action to help endangered species.
