Naramasimha Jayanti is considered a very auspicious festival among Hindus. Vaishakh, the second month of the Hindu calendar, is very dear to Lord Vishnu. In this month, there is a special significance of worshipping, adoring and stotras of Lord Vishnu and Mata Lakshmi. This day is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the fierce form of Vishnu. This day is celebrated with reverence and devotion in memory of the appearance of Lord Vishnu’s fourth incarnation Shri Narasimha. The festival of Naramasimha Jayanti will be celebrated this year on Sunday, May 11, 2025.
According to the Puranas, Lord Narasimha appeared in the form of a man and a lion and saved his devotee Prahlad from the demon Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu received a boon from Lord Shiva that he would neither die inside the house, nor outside, nor during the day, nor at night, nor in the sky, nor on the earth, neither at the hands of a human being, nor at the hands of an animal. Hiranyakashipu got a son named Prahlad, who was a staunch devotee of the deity Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap tried very hard to distract Prahlad from devotion but he was unsuccessful. When devotee Prahlad said that God is present in everything, Lord Vishnu appeared from a pillar in the fearsome form of Narasimha. Lord Vishnu killed Hiranyakashyap in this Narasimha avatar and this date is celebrated as Naramasimha Jayanti.
It is celebrated to reject any kind of negative forces from life and to stay away from evil deeds as well as injustice. It is believed that by observing worship and fasting on this day with rituals, a person gets freedom from all the sins of life and attains salvation. The day of Narasimha Jayanti is an opportunity for devotees to remove negative energy, increase self-confidence, and make spiritual progress. The day symbolizes the victory of Dharma over Adharma.
