Martin Short was officially inducted into Saturday Night Live‘s ultra-exclusive Five-Timers Club during this year’s Christmas episode!

The 74-year-old Only Murders in the Building actor returned to the popular late-night show on December 21. It marked his fifth time hosting, and he was welcomed into a very exclusive club ahead of his opening monologue.

So many stars joined him for the special occasion. However, his close friend and costar Steve Martin was absent. Don’t worry: Martin explained why.

Fellow Five-Timers Club members Tom Hanks Paul Rudd, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin (who has hosted an amazing 17 times!), Scarlett Johansson, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Emma Stone and John Mulaney all joined Martin for the cold open, where he was gifted his official jacket from Jimmy Fallon, who is not a member of the club.

During his opening monologue, Martin joked about why Steve missed the event: “My dear friend Steve Martin is also part of the club. He would have been here tonight, but he had a conflict with me not wanting him to be here.”

He also performed a musical number and kissed Jimmy!
