Elsbeth star Carrie Preston is opening up about Carra Patterson‘s exit from the show after two seasons.
Carra played the role of Kaya throughout the first two seasons of the CBS series and she will no longer be a series regular, but she’ll be back as a guest star in season three.
After the season finale aired on Thursday night (May 8), Carrie opened up about Carra‘s exit.
“It’s been in development since the beginning of season 2,” Carrie told Us Weekly.

She added, “We wanted to honor her and elevate her to detective. So it was very exciting when that happened for the character. Not as exciting for us though because we love Carra. I love Carra and I obviously love playing with her.”
Carrie also opened up about filming Elsbeth and Kaya’s farewell scene.
“Because Carra and I became so close, there was not a problem playing that scene,” she told TV Insider. “We both just needed to show up and look in each other’s faces, and we would start to cry and get teary and feel all the depths of what we had built together. So that was a wonderful gift. The writing itself, too. What Jon wrote was just so beautiful. We shot it actually on Carra’s last day for the schedule. It lined up that way that that was going to be her last day on set. We had all of these returning guest stars, several of them were there. So it did feel like a family. It really felt like we were honoring her character, but we were also honoring Carra, so it was moving, and I know that we will always treasure that and remember that.”
Carra talked about her exit when it was announced last week.
